For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
(Mark 5:28 ESV)

Never in a million years would I have thought that one of my favorite musical artists of all time would be an aid for an assignment for school, especially my Bible class! The book of Mark was very interesting to read this week because it was filled with a block of parables that led up to a block of miracle stories, one
in particular being the topic of interest for this week’s blog. When I came across the following verse, I immediately threw up a red flag in my mind: “And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse” (Mark 5:25). This story connected with me on many levels being that I am woman and I experience what this woman felt but only to a very small degree. Every man knows that if a woman says “it is my time of the month” then it might be best to stand down because that woman’s emotions are on a rollercoaster! Luckily, we as women normally only get a visit from “mother nature” for a week tops, but this woman had a visit for twelve years! Yikes! Therefore, I can only imagine why she had such an abundant amount of faith in the healing power of God. This woman was strong and courageous enough to make her way through a crowd of countless followers of Jesus to only fall to her feet and touch his garment to only hope that she would be healed. Hmmmm, another red
flag pops up in my head. I began to ask myself questions like, “why did she do all of that to just sneak and touch his garment?” “Why did she just not ask for want she wanted to be healed from like most people?” Was this woman attempting to “steal” a healing because the Bible did say “She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment” (Mark 5:27). The best answer I came up with is that the woman felt that she could be healed by just touching the garment of Jesus’ robe because she felt like he had enough power on him from a physical stance just as he had in him from a spiritual perspective. I thought that maybe she didn’t ask him to heal her as others in the Bible did because she felt as though he already knew he need and her faith alone would make her whole. Mark 5:6 states, “and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.” That verse alone showed how even humans such as the doctors that she spent all of her money on gave up hope on her, so maybe she felt that God was her last option. Now that was my answer, but God’s answer states, “And he said to her,“Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” Even Jesus himself noticed the faith that this woman had in him and her healing from the gruesome disease was his ultimate reward (Mark 5:34). Miracles stories in the Bible as such can be viewed as follows: the need established, the seeking of Jesus’ help, the faith displayed by the person seeking the miracle for their families, and the performance of the miracle. The Sam Cooke song “Touch the Hem of His Garment”came into play because it told me
the story in a clearer “down-to-earth”fashion through music, which I love. I marveled at the fact that of all of the stories in the Bible this artist could make a song about, he chose this one.  The story of this woman reconfirmed to me that having faith can get you a long way in life.
